The procedure

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

A fat transfer to the buttocks. Your own fat adds volume and shape, so the result looks and feels natural.

01

Contour

Liposuction takes fat from the abdomen, hips, lower back and thighs.

02

Transfer

The fat is injected into the buttocks for shape and projection.

03

Personalize

Dr. Burnett tailors the technique to your anatomy and goals.

Usually a BBL is a two-step procedure: fat is taken from other areas, then injected into the buttocks to boost shape and projection. It is not performed the same way on every patient; several techniques are used for natural-looking results.

Lifting uses a method similar to a tummy tuck, with a band of skin removed from the lower back to lift the entire buttock. It can be done on its own, without fat transfer. Buttock contouring can be combined with a BBL: excess fat is reduced in one or more areas of the buttock and transferred to other parts to enhance the natural curve.

Dr. Burnett does not offer nonsurgical BBL with Sculptra® and can explain why this butt filler is not recommended during your consultation.

Why buttocks flatten
GeneticsFat storage and bone structure shape your silhouette.
AgeFat storage shifts upward from the rear toward the abdomen.
SittingLong hours of sitting can flatten the look of the rear.
SkinLost elasticity and volume make skin lax and “baggy”.

Genetics play a large role in the size and shape of the buttocks. Everyone stores fat differently, and skeletal structure strongly influences the overall silhouette. Pinchable fat under the skin (subcutaneous fat) greatly affects the size and shape of the butt.

Women tend to store more fat on the lower body when younger because of higher estrogen levels, which gives a curvier look. With age, fat storage “shifts upward” from the rear to the abdomen. A sedentary job, or activities that involve sitting for long stretches, can also flatten the look. Gradual loss of skin elasticity, together with volume loss as fat migrates, makes skin lax; loose skin sags and looks flatter.

Diet and exercise can transform your body, but they may not deliver specific results such as rounder buttocks. If you live healthfully and still want a different shape, a BBL can help you get the look you want.

Why patients choose it

Shape. Balance. Confidence.

Balanced proportions

Upper and lower body, better in proportion.

A more hourglass shape

Balanced curves, a more hourglass figure.

No implants

Natural-looking fullness from your own fat.

Clothes fit better

More comfortable, better-fitting clothing.

Slimmer contours elsewhere

Less unwanted fat in donor areas.

Smoother transitions

Volume softens dips and cellulite.

Fat transfer to the buttocks is a procedure of choice for enhancing the curvature of the rear profile. At Burnett Plastic Surgery it is thought to produce more natural-looking, subtle fullness than silicone butt implants. By re-shaping the buttocks, a BBL can help you reach these goals and boost your confidence and self-esteem.

The right size

Not the biggest.
The most beautiful.

The goal isn’t to be as large as possible. A modest, natural transition between back and buttocks often looks best.

A common misconception is that a BBL is meant to enlarge the buttocks as much as possible. Focusing only on the “biggest booty” can throw off your overall proportions. Projected images of your ideal look would show a natural curve from the lower back, around the hips and down the buttocks, and that often takes very minimal augmentation. Liposuction 360 and a BBL can be performed together, with a synergistic effect that looks like it came from nature.

Is a BBL right for you?

All body shapes can benefit, even men. You need enough fat elsewhere to transfer.

Often a good fit

  • Good health, within about 15 lb of your optimal weight
  • Enough fat on other areas to use as donor tissue
  • A stable weight and healthy lifestyle

Worth discussing

  • Very low body fat: donor fat may be hard to find
  • Very overweight: higher risk of complications
  • Sagging skin: a BBL adds volume, it doesn’t lift

Success depends on an adequate fat store on other areas of the body. It may be difficult to find enough in patients with a very low body fat percentage, so very thin patients may wish to consider other treatments. A BBL isn’t intended for very overweight patients, since being overweight increases the risk of complications. It suits those who plan to maintain their ideal weight and a healthy lifestyle. If you are genetically predisposed to a flatter backside, it can be a great choice.

The cells in fat transfer are living and can expand or shrink, so weight fluctuations after a BBL, or other body contouring, can alter your results. Keep realistic expectations, be as healthy as possible and keep a positive outlook. A BBL adds volume to the lower body but won’t lift excess skin, and it may not be best if you have sagging or very thin skin.

The fat comes from your own lower back, hips or belly. Combined with Dr. Burnett’s skill, the result is a long-lasting, natural-looking enhancement. Dr. Burnett does not offer nonsurgical BBL with Sculptra®.

Some temporary bruising and swelling are common, and most patients take one to two weeks off work. You will wear supportive compression garments for six to eight weeks. They apply consistent, gentle pressure to promote healing, prevent swelling, ease discomfort and help the new curves and skin settle. Complete results typically take several months to be noticeable.

As with any fat grafting, not all transferred fat survives; a percentage is reabsorbed during healing. The area is sensitive, and sitting can inhibit blood circulation and affect results, so Dr. Burnett recommends limiting pressure on the transferred fat. He can guide you on sleep positioning; patients are sometimes advised to sleep on the stomach or side. Short walks are encouraged to heal better and avoid blood clots, but avoid running, jogging and other high-impact activity, which can put harmful pressure on the buttocks.

The buttocks may look flattened and square at first, or feel stiff from swelling; that is normal. Within about six to twelve weeks the skin expands to accommodate the fat and the curves become softer, rounder and more natural, with better projection. The waist also begins to look proportionally smaller. This is the “fluff phase”, and there is no set start time; it depends on your anatomy and skin elasticity. Results generally last many years, and following Dr. Burnett’s post-surgical instructions helps you keep the shape as long as possible.

Questions

Good to know

Can you be too skinny for a BBL?
Possibly. You need adequate fat on other areas of the body to use as donor tissue, and very thin patients may wish to consider other treatments.
How much downtime should I plan for?
Most patients take one to two weeks off work and wear supportive garments for six to eight weeks.
Will all of the transferred fat survive?
Not all of it. A percentage is reabsorbed during healing, and aftercare helps preserve your results.
How long do results last?
Generally many years. A stable weight helps, since the transferred fat cells are living.
Beyond the BBL

Other ways to shape your body

Liposuction, tummy tuck, Mommy Makeover and breast surgery are also available.

A BBL is one of several procedures at Burnett Plastic Surgery for improving body shape. Liposuction is available on its own for slimmer, more streamlined contours. A tummy tuck may suit patients who want to tighten loose skin, reduce fat or repair muscles in the abdomen. A Mommy Makeover combines breast and body surgery to restore a pre-baby body. Breast augmentation, reduction or lift can re-shape the upper body for a more balanced look. The goal of any procedure is a body that inspires pride and confidence.
